The Lotus Eaters The lotus eaters have fallen upon hard times; they have taken to eating rocks and bones, mumbling and crunching their way through midnight. And you can moan oh.....oh but I have had enough done enough seen enough and still they crunch and mutter and chew. Nights upon nights and days upon days and blood upon daughter, brother and son. The lotus eaters have fallen upon hard times; they have taken to burning their garden down with low narrow eyes that reflect tiny flames. And you can moan oh.....oh but I am just tired and have reached the end of what my hands can do and still they burn and burn and burn. Nights within nights and days within days and the smell of smoke from ash by the road. The lotus eaters have fallen upon hard times; they eat now with unholy calm bones and rocks beside the gates of their lotus-laden land and they do not stop. In this white white sun long beyond paradise the lotus eaters have fallen upon hard times. D-- 9/89 |
